ACEA F01 - Heavy Duty

The European push towards reducing CO2 emissions involves all activities and, of course, includes internal combustion engines. In particular, limits are regulated, and the standard currently in force for heavy-duty traction is EURO VI-d.

To comply with these restrictions, systems for reducing harmful components (COx, NOx, particulate matter, etc.) have been progressively introduced, but to meet the latest (and future) regulations, it is necessary to increase engine efficiency: burning less fuel for the same distance traveled results in fewer emissions.

reduce friction

One of the systems to achieve this “Fuel Economy” is to reduce internal friction by using specific oils, particularly those with very low viscosities. The viscosity directly related to engine efficiency is the HT-HS (High Temperature – High Shear).

Just as has been happening for car oils for several years, the new generation of engines for heavy-duty vehicles is designed to perform best with extremely fluid lubricants.

acea f01 goal

The ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers Association), which defines the quality requirements for engine oils, published a new edition of the HD specifications in October, and in this edition, the ACEA F01 specification was introduced.

The goal of this latest specification is to achieve high engine protection, component longevity, while ensuring an extremely low friction characteristic to achieve the desired Fuel-Economy effect.

In fact, it is a modification of the ACEA E8 Specification (which requires a minimum HTHS value of 3.5 cP) with the Fuel Economy requirements, and with an HTHS of 2.6-3.2 cP for the new ACEA F01.

This interesting product feature creates a distinction between new-generation vehicles and older ones, and in particular, the latest ACEA F01 is not backward compatible with traditional engines. For the use of these products, we always recommend checking the User and Maintenance Manual.

Stable, stay-in-grade oil providing excellent control of piston cleanliness, wear, soot handling and lubricant stability. It is recommended for highly-rated diesel engines meeting Euro I, Euro II, Euro III, Euro IV and Euro V emission requirements and running under very severe conditions, eg significantly extended oil drain intervals according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. It is suitable for engines without particulate filters, for some EGR engines and some engines fitted with SCR systems. However, always check the Use and Maintenance manual.

ACEA E6 (Versione 2016 - Disattiva da maggio 2024)
not current

Low Saps engine oil recommended for diesel engines undergoing heavy conditions and satisfying Euro I, Euro II, Euro III, Euro IV, Euro V and Euro VI emission standards. These oils are suitable for engines with EGR systems, with or without particulate filters. They are conceived to be used together with low-sulphur diesel fuel. However, always check the Use and Maintenance manual.
