Published: 10 August 2021

Founded in 1992, the International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) is an organization through which Ford, General Motors, Chrysler and the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Inc. (JAMA) develop minimum performance standards for passenger car engine oils used in gasoline fueled engines. ILSAC oil ratings are based on API categories with additional more stringent tests on requirements for spark-ignited internal combustion engines including a chain wear test and a test for fuel economy fluids. Moreover, a specific test to protect against the phenomenon of low speed pre-ignition (LSPI) which occurs in some gasoline engines.
