Sonoma California, March 7th 2021. World champion team AF Corse debuts in Fanatec GT World Challenge America Championship powered by AWS in AM category to support Gentlemen Drivers Jean-Claude Saada and Conrad Grunewald. The two drivers alternated to the lead of the Ferrari 488 GT3 Evo #61 in GT Races 1 and 2 in the first round of the championship.
Let's give general information as background. Saada won Ferrari Challenge Shell Trophy North America in 2015, while Grunewald closed Pirelli World Challenge 2017 in P2 of the general standing. They were both enthusiastic to transition to GT3 world with such a reliable team like AF Corse, which is a guarantee of success in GT Races.
Grunewald and Saada had a consistent performance during the races but lived with bated breath Friday's free session because of an accident. The mechanics of AF Corse team were forced to work overtime till 3am at night to fix the racing car. But it demonstrated once again its value making all the necessary changes in due time. On Saturday morning Ferrari #61 was in great shape and ready to face Sonoma Circuit without any impediment. It was a flawless performance for both Saada and Grunewald. The drivers got P1 both in Race 1 and Race 2, placing at the top of the AM category and respectively 13th and 8th in the overall standing of this first round.
Next round of GT World Challenge America Championship will take place at COTA (Circuit of the Americas) at the end of April. American season 2021 of GT Races opened with IMSA race at Daytona last January. Luckily the race calendar seems to be solid despite of Covid-19 pandemia so we are positive that all the rounds could be disputed.
