FAQ

How to choose the right engine oil for a motorcycle?

To select the appropriate engine oil for a motorcycle, it is essential to verify both the required specification and viscosity grade recommended by the manufacturer, as well as to assess the service conditions and the intended use of the motorcycle.

As for specifications, we strongly recommend consulting owner's manual to verify the exact requirements set by the OEM. For 2-stroke engines, the typical specification is JASO M345, with performance levels JASO FB/FC/FD - with FD representing the highest standard.

JASO specifications are particularly relevant as they include additional testing for proper wet clutch performance.

Conversely, 4-stroke engines typically require a combination of API and JASO T903 specifications. Within the API classification, the highest relevant grade for motorcycles is generally API SN.

Viscosity selection should be based on usage conditions: for high-load or high-temperature environments, a higher viscosity grade is recommended for enhanced protection, whereas in colder climates a lower viscosity may ensure optimal cold-start performance.

What is the difference between 2-stroke and 4-stroke motorcycle oil?

Motorcycle engines are generally classified in two types: 2-stroke and 4-stroke. As such, there are two distinct categories of lubricants, each specifically formulated and not interchangeable.

In 2-stroke motorcycles, separate lubricants are used for each component-engine, transmission, and clutch. The engine oil must be miscible with fuel, providing low-smoke properties, and possess superior combustion characteristics.

Thus, 2-stroke oils are designed to mix with gasoline and combust within the engine.

In 4-stroke motorcycles, a single lubricant is typically employed to service engine, transmission, and wet clutch.

Therefore, 4-stroke motorcycle oil must deliver optimal lubrication across all these systems while preventing clutch slippage.

What is the purpose of motorcycle chain lubricants?

Chain lubricant is crucial for maintaining the health of the motorcycle chain and preventing premature wear. It also protects the chain from environmental elements such as rain and humidity, thereby preventing corrosion and rust formation.

Pakelo offers a range of spray chain lubricants tailored to different applications:

  • On-road use: suitable for both street and track motorcycles, developed for high-speed and high-stress chain operation.
  • Off-road use: suitable for disciplines such as motocross, enduro, speedway and trial.
What type of oil should be used for motorcycle brakes?

To select the appropriate brake fluid for a motorcycle, it is essential to check the users’ manual and verify the specified fluid.

While DOT 4 is commonly required, this is not universally applicable.

Although commonly referred to as "brake oil", the correct term is brake fluid. While it does offer some lubricating properties, its primary function is to transmit hydraulic pressure to the braking system while withstanding high temperatures and reacting minimally to water contamination.

It is crucial that neither the brake fluid nor any absorbed moisture reaches boiling point during operation, as this could lead to vapor lock, resulting in a spongy brake feel or complete brake failure.

One of the key performance parameters is the Equilibrium Reflux Boiling Point (ERBP), which should be checked on technical data sheet.

Brake fluid chemistry is fundamentally different from that of mineral or synthetic oils used in other vehicle systems, and the fluids are neither miscible nor interchangeable. Therefore, it is imperative to adhere strictly to the manufacturer's guidelines.

For modern motorcycles (and cars) equipped with electronic systems such as ABS and traction control, DOT 4 or DOT 4 LV (Low Viscosity, e.g., Pakelo 4132.00) is typically recommended.

Do motorcycle lubricants influence engine performance?

Absolutely: high-lubricity motorcycle oils, such as those in the Racing product line, can enhance engine performance and improve gear shifting smoothness.

Depending on the motorcycle’s intended use, different oil formulations are available:

  • For daily standard use, we recommend a Regular product like Pakelo Multisint MBK.
  • For high-performance on/off-road use, a Premium product such as Pakelo Krypton MBK is advisable engineered for both reliability and performance under demanding riding conditions including rally stages and urban traffic.
  • For competitive racing applications, we suggest a Racing formulation like Pakelo Krypton MBK Racing, specifically developed to meet the extreme demands of more severe contexts and during training and race events, offering the highest levels of power and performance output.
